In his previous work, Marko Kusmuk has almost always been dealing with introspection and research of human psyche and thoughts until recently when he turned to the theme of cognition which is important concept in painting as well as in humanistic science. In the formal sense, the author creates a series of paintings in the style of expressive figural painting of a strong colouring. With the complex displays of human anatomy, the artist dives into the consideration of the psychological state of human’s consciousness explicating on his canvases the concept of unconscious. According to the author, the essence of his artistic expression is the desire to reach the core of the human’s being, which is represented on a large-scale canvases, by using the combination of artistic skills and knowledge derived from the researching of different theories and relationship interpretations in society. We can perceive series of paintings “Cognition” as a multi-layered painting of the spirit of the era in which it arises, which shows us painter’s relationship with the world as well as with himself as an artist. On Kusmuk’s canvases from the “Cognition” cycle we see human characters with distinctive physiognomy which artist encounters every day, and they are characterized by recognizable rational expressions. A series of works “Cognition” by Marko Kusmuk should be considered as another artistic contribution to the research of the question of personality, truth and logic of sensibility in painting.
